Webliography #5

Learning Page is a website I found for teacher and students. There are fun things like themed worksheets that teachers can pull up for extra activities to give to their children.

Discussion #5

* My audience for my virtual space for the class would be Candace and my classmates. I use my blog to communicate with my teacher through our assignments and also for my classmate to review as well. My webpage is also for the same reasons. My myspace is for me to keep in touch with friends back at home and communicate with friends and family to see what everyone is up to. My facebook is to keep in touch with friends and people I meet at school and other friends I have at other schools.

* My virtual spaces that I have created in class are specifically for academic reasons and because they were assignments. My personal spaces contain more personal information, but I do not contain information that I wouldn’t want everyone to know. The most personal information I guess would be my pictures.

* I think that teachers should have virtual spaces for the students to record their progress and post assignments for the teacher to review. A teacher could have students free write in blogs as a writing assignment and see what the students have on their minds.

* I consider my myspace pretty private because I know all of my friends. I actually deleted my first myspace a while back because I was friends with people I knew but I didn’t talk to them on myspace anymore. I think my information, for the most part, stays pretty private.

* I don’t think my myspace or facebook has any compromising information, but I do have my myspace set to private. I think that when I am out of school and looking for a job, and especially as a teacher, I will delete my myspace because students and parents could look you up and see personal aspects of your life and maybe not take you as seriously.

* I created my facebook last summer when I transferred to the UofA. I created my first myspace about the time I graduated high school. I guess I would say I have a routine when I get on my computer. I check my facebook, myspace, email, and usually D2L all following each other. I think I probably do this maybe two to three times a day. I usually do not spend too much time on facebook or myspace, but sometimes when I am bored I have been guilty of looking around at people’s pages to see what they are up to. My friend’s and I call it creeping. I guess because it is a little creepy, however most people who have one are guilty of it as well.

Summary:
When I searched for Melissa Oster on the University of Arizona website the first link that was shown was a phonebook directory of my address and phone number. The second link that was shown was for a job posting that I had put up on the career site for anybody who attended the UofA who might have been looking for an internship in Scottsdale over the summer. I was leaving the company and looking for someone to replace me. The rest of the links were not my exact name but only people with the last name of Oster or first name of Melissa.

Reaction:
As I was searching through these different search engines for my name, it was interesting to see that there were other Melissa Oster’s out there. It is weird to think about someone else having the exact name you have, especially since my last name is somewhat unique, I wouldn’t have expected someone else to have my exact name, but it seems that at least two people in this country do. I would like to know the Melissa Oster that has a jeweler company. Maybe she could give me some free jewelry!. It was also very interesting to search on the University of Arizona website and see my contact information come up. That is something I am not sure I want to be so accessible on the Internet. Also, that the job posting that I had listed last summer at my internship came up was interesting. I had forgotten that I had done that. Overall, this assignment was interesting to see the different things that came up on the different search engines. I’m glad none of my personal information came up when I searched google and yahoo. Those are popular sites, and I don’t want people to be able to search my private information so freely. I as a little surprised that my myspace page did not pop up, but I assume that is because it is set to private.

Core Knowledge is a site that I found and it is an organization that provides a curriculum for schools around the country. This organization provides teacher, parents, and students an idea that there should be an understood core curriculum that is being taught throughout our schools to ensure that the kids are being taught the proper materials for their ages. This site was good because it has a nice curriculum that teachers can use and the site contains stories and lessons in word or PDF format for the teachers to use in their classroom.

Discussion 3

The article “Engage Me or Enrage Me” brought up many interesting and valid points about schools today and the ways education has changed. I think that all of the distractions children have in their lives today such as video games, ipods, cell phones, and so many more are definitely putting an impact on children’s imaginations and ways of learning. I think these distractions should urge teachers to be more attentive to their class and children individually. Teachers need to find new and innovative ways to get children involved in their classroom activities and lessons. I also think that many schools should resort to more “old school” methods of teaching. Some of these new technological aids for education can get a little distracting for the children. One major subject that sticks out in my head when it comes to technology affecting a child’s capability of learning is Math. Calculators and computers provide a technology that will almost completely solve a problem without having the child actually have to think too hard to come up with the answer. I think teachers should educate their class on how to operate and utilize a calculator in the correct way, but for the most part teachers should not allow calculators in their classrooms to make sure the students understand the material, and not just how to operate the calculator.
There are many activities and lessons that can be useful and helpful for children to learn using technology. One great activity that I would try to get my students involved in could be by utilizing an ipod or an mp3 player. Each student could have access to their own personal ipod, and I could record or use different types of learning songs for lessons such as multiplication or even spelling. A lot of lessons deal with memorization, and being able to put headphones in a child’s ear could eliminate some distraction while they hear the repetition that is needed to memorize the material.
Another activity that I would consider using in my classroom would be using a video recorder. I know growing up one of my favorite things we did all year was putting on class plays. Using a video camera could allow the class to use creativity and imagination to come up with their own plays to put on for their parents or for the school. They could record themselves be able to have that memory with them forever.
Another great learning tool that teacher’s could utilize in the classroom could be using a digital camera. Many science projects require the children to do observations. For example, I might be doing a science project on different types of rocks. I could take the children outside to explore the varieties of rocks that are on the campus of the school, and they children could take pictures. The children could label the pictures Igneous, Metamorphic, or Sedimentary and they will be able to use the pictures to make their observations and use them to study. This could be useful for children with a low attention span who many not are able to remember without a picture in front of them. Another method of teaching that would utilize technology could be by using personal laptops for children. Many children find it difficult to organize their assignments and papers in folders. At my after-school teaching job, I noticed that many assignments had been stuffed in desks, thrown on the floor, or stuffed in backpacks. Students would complain frequently “someone stole their homework”. It was very rare that another student actually did steal another student’s homework because most of the time it had been thrown away or lost due to the disorganization of their class assignments. If each student was able to use laptops, their homework assignments and activates could be easily organized in folders on the laptop. This way, children wouldn’t be able to say that someone stole their homework or they lost it because it would be easily accessible and organized in their folders on their personal laptops.

Teachnet is another teaching website that would be helpful for teachers. There were also some cute little jokes about teachers. I appreciated the joke about a teacher’s salary. Very true!
Teacher Tools Here is the new link from webliography 2. I think I accidentally pasted the wrong web address into the hyperlink. Sorry about that. Let me know if it still doesn't work.
